Why these months?

Two things decide your odds on the Henry's Fork: flow and season. You need the river in its fishable-flow band — so a freestone in spring runoff is out no matter how good the hatch would be, while a dam-fed tailwater holds shape year-round. On top of that, the hatches and water temperatures line up best in July and June and September and August, which is why those months edge out the rest. The Henry's Fork's season runs year-round tailwater below island park dam; prime june–september.

The Henry's Fork is the most famous dry-fly river in America and arguably the most demanding. Below Island Park Dam, Box Canyon is fast, boulder-strewn nymphing water thick with stoneflies and big rainbows; a few miles downstream the river opens into Harriman Ranch — the slow, glassy, weed-bedded flat where educated trout sip tiny mayflies and break the hearts of very good anglers. Cold, stable dam releases keep it productive from the salmonfly hatch through the fall.

Where to fish the Henry's Fork

Box Canyon rewards heavy nymph rigs fished deep in the first few feet of the drift; the Ranch is a sight-fishing flat where presentation matters more than pattern and a long fine leader is not optional. At the top of the ideal band the canyon fishes better from a boat than on foot.
