Why these months?

Two things decide your odds on the Weber River: flow and season. You need the river in its fishable-flow band — so a freestone in spring runoff is out no matter how good the hatch would be, while a dam-fed tailwater holds shape year-round. On top of that, the hatches and water temperatures line up best in October and April and March and September, which is why those months edge out the rest. The Weber River's season runs a reservoir-controlled middle-weber tailwater between rockport and echo reservoirs near park city/coalville; irrigation-season releases push summer flows well above wadeable, dropping back to prime levels pre-runoff (spring) and again once releases taper in fall.

The middle Weber River between Rockport and Echo Reservoirs is a classic Wasatch Back tailwater 40 minutes from Park City, holding good numbers of brown trout with the occasional cutthroat and rainbow. Reservoir releases buffer it against the worst of spring runoff and keep it fishing through the heat of summer, though at flows better suited to searching for pockets than technical dry-fly work; the real prime season is the shoulder months when releases taper toward irrigation-off levels.
